This is a list of kernel extensions (KEXTs) which will be excluded at startup, and is stored in /System/Library/Extensions/AppleKextExcludeList.kext. There have been some glitches in this: version 3.28.1 of 26 February 2016 was a dud, and was replaced by 3.28.2 on 28 February 2016, because it excluded a key Ethernet driver for some recent models. MRT Configuration Data Latest version: 1.18, 7 June 2017.

Note this has now been superseded. I have an iMac and the ethernet port stopped working (2.13 kernel extension) so I upgraded to OS Sierra – this did not fix the issue. Incompatible Kernel Extension Configuration Data Latest version: 12.0.8, 21 September 2016 is installed. The mac did not seem to have the version 3.28.1 installed but it was running 10.10.5 before the upgrade.
Would this latest Kernel Extension be the cause of the issue and is there a way to re-install this? I have read this article but not yet actioned. With Sierra’s current KEXT configuration data installed, I am confident that it is not being excluded by Sierra. That bug only existed for a few days with one release of those data – all they did was block the KEXT which was required for the Ethernet ports of certain Macs. Sierra installs a new KEXT which is not blocked. I suggest that you run Apple Hardware Test / Diagnostics to confirm that the port itself is working – they do sometimes suffer hardware failure.
