A planet and moon, both with life. A planet with more than 250 moons. A gas giant orbiting another gas giant.
A brown dwarf star with no parent star. A neutron star. A black hole not attached to another star. Melanoheliophobia: fear of black holes. First off, let me state that I love SpaceEngine. It's a phenomenal piece of software. I never would have thought that I would spend so many hours flying through simulated space.
The graphics are truly amazing, and the procedural generation of planets with life is awesome, as is the ability to go down to the surface of those planets. All that said, it is currently Windows only. Ports for other systems like Mac and Linux are likely, but there doesn't appear to be an ETA. From what I've read, there are no plans for this to be an open source project, so the binary-only Mac port will probably work ok, but I have doubts about a binary only Linux release. Unless the project maintainer(s) plan on providing binary compilations for all the major versions of Linux, I have doubts that this will be a stable, usable program on that platform.

Not to mention other OSes that may want to use this (.BSD), but won't be able to. Ok, I know now you're saying 'Why should I care? I run Windows and SpaceEngine works now and it's beautiful!'

My main goal with this post is not to turn people off to SpaceEngine, but to point out an alternative space simulator called Celestia. I searched this sub-reddit and didn't come up with any hits, which was surprising to me.
Celestia is an open-source, cross-platform space simulator and it pulls from some of the same data sources (Hipparcos Catalogue) as SpaceEngine. It's not nearly as pretty as SpaceEngine, but is also a lot less taxing on lower-end systems. It's also lacking a few things that SpaceEngine has.

For instance, it doesn't have procedural planet generation and you can't see the detailed terrain of extraterrestrial planets. It also hasn't been updated in a while (the source since May 2013, with some of the binaries are from 2008). Anyway, I was just thinking that with some of the potential bottlenecks involved in having a single developer drive a project like SpaceEngine, it might be good for interested coders to know about, and potentially contribute to a project like Celestia. I'm not trying to pit these programs against each other, just trying to make sure the maximum amount of interest, involvement and development in space simulators can be realized. Also, I am in no way involved with Celestia, other than having downloaded and used it:).
You're right that it probably won't get added any time soon, unless enough space-loving developers are inspired revive the project;) I totally agree that people use SE for different things, and the depth that procedural generation adds is beyond amazing. My only problem with it is that I would almost rather see how a convincing universe is generated from code than looking at a universe generated from code. I am pretty sure if the code were released tomorrow, I would ultimately spend more time looking at and playing with the code than I have using the program. That's the audience I'm in, and I know it's not the audience other people that use SE are in. There are no plans for this to be an open source project, so the binary-only Mac port will probably work ok, but I have doubts about a binary only Linux release. Unless the project maintainer(s) plan on providing binary compilations for all the major versions of Linux, I have doubts that this will be a stable, usable program on that platform Then how do so many other closed-source programs manage to keep their Linux users happy? This does not strike me as a significant obstacle.
Regarding Celestia, it is a very nice program and is usable on pretty much any machine. It's a shame that development stopped when it did, they were working on a lot of really cool things. However, I doubt that most people who are longing to use SE but are unable to would be satisfied with Celestia. Sure, great points. Mostly where I'm coming from is that I've asked myself the question: 'Would this be a project I'd want to get involved with?'

The answer is yes, but I can't. I'm probably not knowledgeable enough with OpenGL to get involved, but without looking at the source I don't know either way. If enough people had the same impulse to contribute, an open source alternative could be developed (possibly based on Celestia, possibly not).
The issue is that, from everything I've seen, this is basically a one developer project, meaning a single developer is both responsible for its awesomeness and also entirely determines its fate. When some game studio recognizes this engine's potential, it's possible the free SpaceEngine project will be sidelined as attention shifts to the Game Project, which pays the bills. As for the Linux/binary thing, I don't know of any successful binary-only programs that don't have a large development team. Since SE can be run with some success using Wine, I guess it could just be compiled against WineLib (this is what Google did with Picasa I think), but I've never used a WineLib program I didn't know was a WineLib program. It would be great if they (or he) can pull off a great Linux binary release, but we'll see when it happens.
